India Launches First Underwater Archaeology Ship

India’s Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has launched a dedicated ship for underwater archaeology research. Named Samudra Ratna, the ship is equipped with submersibles, sonar, and 3D-mapping tools. Its first mission will explore submerged Harappan port sites off Gujarat’s coast. Marine archaeologists hope to find artifacts and sunken ships that could change India’s understanding of its maritime history. Collaborations with UNESCO and international universities will add global scientific inputs. It marks a milestone in India’s archaeological capabilities.
