India Opens Real-Time Oceanic Earthquake Alert System

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has operationalized the Real-Time Oceanic Earthquake Alert System that covers the Indian Ocean region. It uses 30 seabed sensors and 11 satellites to detect deep-sea seismic activity and relay tsunami warnings within seconds. The alerts reach 18 coastal states and island territories. It is expected to save thousands of lives in the event of another 2004-scale tsunami. The center, located in Hyderabad, also collaborates with Pacific and Southeast Asian tsunami networks for data sharing and drills.
