West Bengal’s Urban Development Ministry has adopted a new policy that mandates all future public infrastructure to be inclusive for persons with disabilities and the elderly. All bus stops, metro stations, parks, and markets will include ramps, tactile guides, and visual alerts. Kolkata’s New Town is the first urban area to fully comply. The policy was drafted in consultation with NGOs and disability rights activists. It is expected to significantly improve access to public spaces for over 3 lakh residents across the state.
